Townhouse Basement Kitchen

This four storey Victorian terraced house has a small window to the front and single door to the rear of the converted basement, which meant light was at a premium. Michael created a crisp, modern, open-plan kitchen dining space to address the challenges of the space, staying with a largely off-white, pale colour palette which reflects light and compensates for the lack of natural light in the basement.

LED spots in the ceiling and the dining area’s ambient lighting are controlled with zoned dimmers so the ambience can be controlled at the touch of a switch. To create a unity to the open plan space, a porcelain floor tile was selected for the whole room.

The kitchen is by Italian company, Arredo3, from the TIME range, with Bianco matt lacquered doors. A bank of Miele appliances are set in one wall with an integrated fridge-freezer and drinks fridge and a pair of identical ovens. A 1.8m wide frosted glass fronted cabinet stores all glassware and crockery. The unit has integral lighting which glows through the soft blue glass, adding yet more light and a touch of colour to the kitchen space.

The island, topped with Pulsar Nebula Silestone, is large enough to be functional – featuring sink, dishwasher and hob, with double-sided storage beneath – but not so large that it dominates the space. The stainless steel under counter sink features a Vola mixer tap and Quooker boiling water tap. With the hob positioned in the centre of the room, any extraction unit was going to be highly visible so Michael selected a striking pendant extractor from Elica.
